Hop the border...
Wow...almost two months without a post - I must've forgot I had a blog!
Actually I've just been two lazy to write anything, but lately one of the items in the news has gotten me a bit riled up and I feel like it's time to speak my mind.
I'm talking about illegal immigration of course. Turn on the evening news and you can't help but be bombarded with video of some Mexicans running around waving flags and chanting. I believe the media is in error when they report that the issue is about immigration - nothing could be further from the truth! The issue is with ILLEGAL immigration. I have no problem with someone wanting to come to America - just do it legally!
I had to write an essay on this topic a few years ago, and I feel this excerpt from it sums up my feelings pretty well:
"I have no problem with legal immigrants taking advantage of government benefits, but it is a blatant abuse of the system when illegal immigrants are given benefits paid for with taxpayer money.
For example, Governor Kathleen Sebilus of Kansas supports giving illegal immigrants a driver’s license. The key word is illegal! Why should we give them anything? Last time I checked, the government was interested in preventing illegal activity, not promoting it. Actually, the offer of a driver’s license for an illegal immigrant might be a good guise to round them up for deportment.
The government shouldn’t be giving benefits, let alone driver’s licenses to anyone who is identified by the word illegal. This isn’t to mean that I dislike immigrants. In fact, I take great pride in the fact that so many people want to move to the United States. People don’t dream of immigrating to China, Iran, or North Korea. People don’t lash together small rafts and try to float to Vietnam. No, they dream of coming to America, where they can build a better life for themselves. They dream of living in this great land, where they can work toward that American Dream."
